The best film Erik Poppe has put out in years

Griping drama about a war photographer who is caught between choosing her family or her work. Which we learn is a lot more complicated than we initially thought. The cast did a believable portrayal of the difficulties that people encounter in life between their passion and family. What I liked especially about this film was that the lead was not portrayed as some war hero and her story was not romanticized. The story and characters all felt realistic and convincing since the characters were different shades of gray. Something that is amiss these days within film making. There is always a need to create a struggle between good and evil. Probably one of the better stories I have seen this year. Erik Poppe you did a great job with this one!

INTERSTELLAR  Reviews

Unmatched visuals and writing, yet sentimentalist and most definitely not Nolan's best directorial work

29 October 2014 | by – See all my reviews

I will keep this short for the sake of not spoiling anything.

Right off i should say I love Nolan. I adore most of his movies, and Interstellar is no exception. It is a marvelous piece of work whose visuals will be hard to forget. His shots of space and the way he played with colors is rather masterful. Maybe i expected it to be greater than what i saw, but even though i was moved by the movie i did not quite feel like he created something great with 'Interstellar.' This could be attributed maybe to his overuse of sentimentalism in the father-daughter relationship he creates. Nolan really tries to make you cry with this one. I have never seen him use such powerful emotions in his movies; however that is not necessarily a good thing for this movie, given that he uses his time trying to develop a family relationship at the expense of flow and congruency. Again, the Visuals are completely off the charts. The visual imagery is truly beautiful and something that Nolan has always excelled at. Given that the most visually stunning movie in recent years, Gravity, recently came out, Interstellar does not lag behind and shows you a spectacle of Visual effects. He will most likely win Visual effects at the Oscars. The Hans's score is marvelous and will most likely earn an Oscar nomination. Matthew Mcconaughey's acting is good, but nothing stellar, especially coming off the best acting role of his career. He plays the character like it should be played, but Nolan's characters never being truly drawn out or rounded does not help him any.The same can be said for the rest of the cast. The little girl was marvelous though. I do not want to reveal any piece of the story whatsoever, but i have to say, it is one of the most original scripts i've ever seen.

Ultimately this movie is entertaining. There is no way Nolan can miss that. Another great thing that Nolan excels at is INSPIRING. By the time the credits rolled and people walked out, I sat there still in awe at the strong sense of human will the movie conveys. Personally, I don't think this is Nolan's best. I believe Memento stands as his masterpiece. But with Nolan, everyone has their own favorite movie. Maybe for some, Interstellar will be their favorite movie, for it is really Nolan's most ambitious and visually-striking work.

By the way, Anyone else who even tries to compare Interstellar to "2001: A Space Odyssey" is out of their mind. Kubrick's mission was to create art. Nolan in "Interstellar" sets to awe and inspire its audiences. It is truly a great piece of work.

" Kite " Reviews

OK, so I haven't heard a single thing about this movie prior to seeing the title. I saw the poster-> I saw the trailer-> I read the reviews and this is what I did. I went in and watched the anime. I'd say don't do it :). It's just porn that is. Or at least some substantial part of it. I got to know the characters and then went in and watched the movie.

I don't know what the other people saw, but the movie is WAYYY above 4.3. I mean it's no masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, and the budget wasn't even average probably, but come on 4.3>? I tell you this, it's better than most of this month's movies like No good deed, November man, As above so below, The giver, The Strain, Hercules, Sex Tape, TMNT etc., etc. in my opinion of course. Actually it's better than most of the stuff that came out all summer (with notable exceptions of course- Edge of tomorrow FTW!)

The adaptation is very well done, without excess nudity and sex, which I find as BIG plus. I am tired of tits, asses and Hollywood crap. Without spoiling anything, I think the movie is a solid candidate for a night with friends or if you dig dark, gritty and a bit different movies.

Solid 7 for me. At least it made me want to see what's gonna happen next, which is more than I can say for most of the productions coming out lately.

The Gunman Reviews

really liked this film
17 June 2015 | See all my reviews

Good plot - took you to Congo, Spain and London. Something to think about what may or does go in Africa with the corruption of their natural resources.

Well thought out, no silly stupid explosions, villains held their guns right and for a change there were no Chuck Norris's or Bruce Lee's in the fighting.

And that is the biggest gripe of mine when it comes to action film - most films are too far fetched. Need more films like this and such as the 'Heat ' Leon'. Why cant they make real films anymore? The only bit that spoil it for me was an illness - didn't need it in the script

"Woman in Gold" Reviews

Perfection

16 April 2015 | by (Detroit, MI) – See all my reviews

This movie is just flawless in any category; acting, cinematography, sound, locations, story flow. Helen Mirren is of course the star but everybody else involved were perfect also. Telling the young woman's life story, their hair-raising escape from Nazi occupation, and at the same time describing the red tape involved in trying to get back stolen family property by the Nazi's 50 years prior is just a stunning accomplishment. But, the icing on the cake, which they could have ignored, is how most of the population of Austria (and other European countries) colluded with the Nazi's.

This is such an incredible movie, it should be required screening in high schools, it should never be forgotten what happens when hate and prejudice team up with apathy. No graphic violence is required to get the message across - classy all the way.
